Can cold weather cause a power outage?

The short answer is yes, cold weather can be the reason for a power outage. There are many reasons that can cause a power outage in the winter months. One reason is because on cold days the electric heaters are turned up throughout the electrical system which can cause an equipment overload.

What do I do when cold weather causes a power outage?

When your power goes out, you should first check your home’s electrical panel to make sure you have not blown a circuit. If your neighborhood lights are out, you can call your local utility company to report the outage and get assistance as soon as possible.

Be sure to do not to approach any power lines that are down. You should simply call your utility company to come clean up the power lines.

Stay updated for when your power will be restored by listening to a battery powered radio.

If you do not have a heater to keep your house warm, you should bundle up in jackets and blankets to stay warm. You can also stay warm by taking a hot shower. Your hot water tank should stay warm for a few hours. If you have a regular wood stove or fireplace, you can use it for heat. However, do not use kerosene heaters, BBQs, or any outdoor type heater inside. Such devices create poisonous gases such as carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas given off by combustion and could kill.

You will want to unplug your large appliances so when the power comes back on it does not create a power surge. You might want to leave a light on so you will know when the power is restored.
